Donald was born in 1786.  Donald's father was George Mowat and his mother was Catherine Dunnet.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Mowat and Helen Coghill; his maternal grandparents were John Dunnet and Catharine Swanson.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Peter, Donald and Elspet.  He was the youngest of the four children.
