Daniel was born in 1820.  Daniel's father was Donald Mowat and his mother was Catherine Calder.  His paternal grandparents were George Mowat and Catherine Dunnet; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Calder and Catherine Manson.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, George, Donald, Janet, Elizabeth and Catharine.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
