Mary was born in 1847.  Mary's father was Alexander McNiven and her mother was Euphemia MacDonald.  Her maternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Duncan, Malcolm, Flory and Catherine.  She was the youngest of the five children.
