Hugh was born in 1897.  Hugh's father was Duncan McKinnon and his mother was Morag MacLean.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh McKinnon and Margaret MacColl.  He had a brother and four sisters, named Donald, Katie, Margaret, Christina and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
