Charles was born in 1842.  Charles' father was Archibald MacDonald and his mother was Flora Kennedy.  His paternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald; his maternal grandparents are Allan Kennedy and Flora MacDougal.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Malcolm, Allan and Mary.  He was the youngest of the four children.
