Robert was born in 1842.  Robert's father was Robert Campbell and his mother was Elizabeth MacKay.  His paternal grandparents were John Campbell and Isabella Sutherland; his maternal grandparents were John MacKay and Janet MacKay.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Jane, Isabel, Janet and Margaret.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
