Catherine was born in 1909.  Catherine's father was William Bain and her mother was Eliza Matheson.  Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Bain and Helen Sutherland; her maternal grandparents are John Matheson and Alexandrina McKay.  She had five brothers and six sisters, named Alexander, Hugh, Robert, William, George, Margaret, Alexina, Helen, Cecilia, Johanna and Eliza.  She is the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
