Francis was born in November 1772 in Aalburg and his baptism took place there on November 29th, 1772.1  Francis' father was Arij Verhagen and his mother was Anneke Kameraad.  His paternal grandfather was Cornelis Arienszn Verhaagen and his paternal grandmother is Teuntje Jacobsdr de Reus; his maternal grandparents are Philip Cameraad and Bastiaantje Colijn. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Cornelis, Cornelis, Filip, Filip, Bastiaantje and Teuntje.  He is the sixth oldest of the seven children.
