Nicolaes was born about 1500.1  Nicolaes' father was Jan Nicolaaszn van der Stegen and his mother was Margaretha Kempen.  His paternal grandparents were Claes Janszn van der Stegen and Heijlwich Hermansdr Pijnne; his maternal grandparents were Jan Janszn Kemp and Mechteld Goessensdr Toelincx.  He was an only child.  He died about 1569 in 's Hertogenbosch.1
