Jan Janszn was born in 1667 in Veen and his baptism took place there on December 11th, 1667.  Jan Janszn's father was Jan Nicolaeszn Sonnevelt and his mother was Willemina Jansdr van den Heuvel.  His paternal grandparents were Nicolaes Philipszn Sonnevelt and Maricken Gerritsdr; his maternal grandparents were Jan Janszn van den Heuvel and Maijken Jans van Dijck. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Nicolaes Janszn, Iven Janszn, Gerardus Janszn, Gerrit Janszn, Sophia Jansdr, Maria Adriana Jansdr and Anna Elisabeth Jansdr.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
