She was twenty years old when the Visigoth Alaric attacked Rome and took her prisoner.
Four years later she was married to Ataulfo, Alaric's successor, who was later assassinated.
She was allowed to leave the 'barbarians' and took refuge withher brother, Honorius.
Aged twenty-seven, she married a general of the empire and succeeded in having him proclaimed co-emperor as Constantius III.
When widowed a second time, and after the death of her brother Honorius, she had her own son, Valentinian III, placed on the imperial throne of the west, while she exercised the power of a regent (15 aug 423-435).
She died aged sixty and was buried in Rome.
Aelia Galla Placidia , de dochter van keizer Theodosius I werd na de dood van haat vader opgevoed door generaal Stilicho. Nadat Rome in 410 door koning Alarik onder de voet was gelopen, werd het meisje als gijzelaar meegevoerd. Drie jaar later zocht Alariks zwager Athaulf echter toenadering tot de Romeinen. Hij sloot een verbond met keizer Honorius en bezegelde dit door Aelia Galla Placidia tot vrouw te nemen. De jeugdige koning der Visigothen overleed echter al in 415 en in 417 hertrouwde ze met de latere keizer Constantius III. Na diens dood trad ze gedurende 12 jaren op als regentes voor haar minderjarige zoon de later keizer Valentianus III.
