Maria was born in Hulst (Zeeland).1  Maria's father was Lodewijk van der Maelstede and her mother was Elisabeth Vilain.  Her paternal grandparents were Jan van der Maelstede and Margaretha N.N.; her maternal grandparents were Wouter Vilain and Adelise van Temse.  She was an only child.  She died before 1350.1
