Maritje was born on September 4th, 1807 in Amsterdam and her baptism took place on September 13th, 1807 in Amsterdam (Zuiderkerk).1   Maritje's father was Israel Lotz and her mother was Rijkje Beukers.  Her paternal grandparents are Jan Lotz and Johanna Mulder; her maternal grandparents are Pieter Beukers and Maretje van Leersum. She had four brothers named Jan Pieter, Hendrik, Coenraad and Hendrik.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
