Mathijs was born in 1698 in Zuilichem and his baptism took place there on February 6th, 1698.1 2  Mathijs' father was Mathijs Thijssen de Jongh and his mother was Fijke Petersdr van Andel.  His paternal grandfather is Matthijs Leonard Baijenszn Hoogerwerff and his paternal grandmother was Lijntje Hendricksdr van Rosmalen; his maternal grandparents were Peter Corneliszn van Andel and Iken Andriesdr Bok. He had a brother and three sisters, named Peter Thijssen, Eijken Thijse, Lijntje and Angeniet.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 76 on March 30th, 1774 in Nieuwaal.1
