Joost was born on February 23rd, 1786 in Almkerk en Emmikhoven and his baptism took place there on February 26th, 1786.1   His godmother was Geertruij Spiering. Joost's father was Peter de Graaf and his mother was Elisabeth Spiering.  His paternal grandparents were Jan de Graaff and Jacomeijntje Jansdr van Thiel; his maternal grandparents were Joost Janszn Spiering and Maria van der Pol. He had two brothers and a sister, named Jan, Jan and Mieke.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Lammertje.  He died at the age of 58 on July 10th, 1844 in Emmikhoven en Waardhuizen.2
