Jan was born on August 5th, 1731 in Andel.1  Jan's father was Jan Bouman and his mother was Maria Jansdr van Tiel.  His paternal grandparents were Joost Sweerzn Bouman and Maeijken Jansdr de Pender. He had a brother and three sisters, named Joost, Maaijken, Maria and Margrita.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
