Hendrik was born in 1220.1  Hendrik's father was Walter van Berthout and his mother was Adelheid van Enghien.  His maternal grandparents were Engebert IV van Enghien and Ida van Avesnes. He had three brothers and a sister, named Walter VII, Egidius, Arnold and N.N..  He died at the age of 63 in 1283.1
