Mattheus was born on October 1st, 1713 in Heerewaarden and his baptism took place there on October 1st, 1713.  Mattheus' father was Jan van den Bergh and his mother was Cornelia van Wijnen.  His paternal grandparents are N.N. and N.N.; his maternal grandparents were Arie Willemsz  van Wijnen and  Theuntje (Teuniske) Herberts . He had two brothers and a sister, named Dirck, Arien and Teuntje.  He was the oldest of the four children.
