Benjamin was born on May 21st, 1873 in Accommodation Square (no 3), Leeds, Yorkshire.¹ Benjamin's father was James John Smith and his mother was Sarah Gale. His paternal grandparents were John Smith and Mary Germaine; his maternal grandparents were William Gale and Elizabeth Jordan. He had four brothers and a sister, named Charles, Frederick, James, Herbert and Mary. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died as a result of uremia and nephrosclerosis at the age of 67 on May 2nd, 1941 in Beckett Street (no 123) (St James Hospital), Leeds, Yorkshire.²
