Her paternal grandparents were William Butler and Mary Arendall; her maternal grandparents were James Brooksbank and Caroline Roberts. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Mark, James, Mary, Caroline, Florence, Matilda, Nellie and Louie. She was the third oldest of the nine children.-
