Silas was born in 1831 in Springfield, Bucks, Pennsylvania.  Silas' father was Henry Beidler and his mother was Elizabeth Beidler. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Peter, Edward, Olevia and Matilda.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
