Jan was born on August 31st, 1955 in Praha.  Jan's father was Jaroslav Mintora and his mother was Emilie Mintorová.  His paternal grandparents were Josef Mintora and Anna Mintorová; his maternal grandparents were Jan Čevona and Helena Čevonová (Horehleďová). He has a sister named Jaromíra.  He is the younger of the two children.
