    - John Phillips is a direct ancestor of both Presidents George Bush, and many other notable people. He is the progenitor of many Phillips who came to America via New England after 1630. For a fourth, see the file of John Phillips, Virginia Progenitor, descended from this John. All of these families are somewhat interwoven, deriving from the titled family of Picton Castle, Wales. Records have been obtained from the family records at Picton Castle, as well as from Burke's Peerage, records from other families' research which crossed lines with the Phillips, and other source documents which precede parish church records. It is worth noting that Castle records prefer the name spelled as "Philipps"; and some of the New York State descendants who came from Wales through Germany, used the spelling 'Philips'. Today, these spelling distinctions may be significant to modern families, but the spellings were certainly varied and interchangeable in early times. Phillips.--Eleanor Lexington, in her 'Colonial Families of America', says, "Emperors and kings, princes and dukes have borne the name of Phillips or Philips, and the family has a rich heritage in its tradition." The birth records of John Phillips' children indicate a pattern of movement of his family from Cornwall through Devon. (Cornwall/Shropshire contains many parish churches which were used by families deriving from the ancestral Phillips home, Picton Castle, the Phillips estate. Picton Castle is still occupied by the Phillips family, but was taken over by the National Trust in 1982; no wonder, it is one of the largest castles and estates in all of the United Kingdom - it may be visited today.) Similar patterns in other members of John's immediate family line were traced because the father was a pastor. Given the number of clerical offspring in this family, and the extent of family involvement with serious religious concerns and settlement, it is very likely that John was a clergyman. I will post evidence of this as it becomes available. While several other lines of Phillips emigrated to America and Canada, it is the descendants of this John Phillips (with both of his wives) who most profoundly weave through the settlement and history of early New England. You will find clergy, teachers, and military officers, including at least three generals, in the descendants of John Phillips. You will find stalwart Puritans and religious rebels. Look closely, and you will also find some scoundels. The strong backbone of the tree is created by the pioneering yeomen, farmers, and businessmen, with their wives and families. As you travel outward from this backbone, you will find witches of Salem, and judges of witches, in this family tree; you will find captains and passengers who went down with their ships. Success and failure, comedy and tragedy, abound in the family descent which begins here. The oldest person found in this tree lived to be 104. Twelve individuals found here passed the age of 100 years. Unfortunately, a much larger number of children died at birth, and about forty mothers died while delivering babies. One or two genetic birth defects of members of this tree are noted, where serious and/or fatal illness have been passed down through family lines. Despite this precaution,.... Connections shown in this family tree, with Mayflower passengers, Winthrop fleet passengers, DAR, and United Empire Loyalists, are accurate, but do not constitute sufficient proof to gain automatic membership in the venerable societies of descendants which exist today (June, 2001). Anyone interested in establishing such membership should visit the appropriate websites for membership information and applications. Any such memberships may involve the payment of fees, in addition to the provision of proof of descent. I generally do, but do not always, post sources. This would require at least ten or twelve thousand additional notations. There are 300,000 lines of text with source material and historical information, wills, etc., already in this tree. Over 600 sources are cited in footnotes. Generally I can produce sources on request, given time. However, every detail shown here has a source. Not one entry is purely speculative. There has been much contact (by email) with living family members, descendants of individuals found in this tree. In some cases, long-accepted family legends have been shown to be incorrect. Be prepared to have an open mind, if you approach us with a problem. In all cases, it is better to be closer to the truth. Many generations of ancestors found here lived their lives in accordance with religious beliefs and political affiliations which must always be treated with the greatest respect. We who are living, are here because of the consequences of lives which were lived in such ways. Our ancestors would hope and expect that these seeds would be sewn in us, as we hope the same in our children and grandchildren. In the presence of our ancestors here, all who participate in this family tree, are expected to step into these shoes which were made for us. Our ancestors made us; we are them.
