Martha was born in 1867 in Tenterden, Kent, England.  Martha's father was Joseph King and her mother was Sarah Ann Wanstall.  Her maternal grandparents were Mark Wanstall and Lydia Luckhurst. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Joseph, Albert, Lydia and Ann.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children. She had a half-sister named Philly.
