Edward was born on September 11th, 1828 in Port Elizabeth and his baptism took place on October 5th, 1828 in St Marys, Port Elizabeth.  Edward's father was Jonathan Crooks and his mother was Sarah Bellaby.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Bellaby and Mary Unknown. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John Nuthall, William, William James, Henry, Annie, Mary, Amelia, Emma, Sarah Weston and Elizabeth. He had a half-sister named Annie.  He died at the age of 54 on May 17th, 1883.  His burial was in St Mary's Cemetery, Port Elizabeth.
