Spencer was born on July 2nd, 1835 in Wittersham, Kent.  Spencer's father was William Addy and his mother was Mattilda Glover. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Alfred, Matilda, Caroline, Maria and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 62 on June 1st, 1898.
