Jacques de Bailleul

Jacques' father was Hector de Bailleul and his mother was Catherine van Claerhout. His paternal grandparents were Pierre de Bailleul and Philipotte de la Bricque; his maternal grandparents were George van Claerhout and Catherine van Schyngen. He had four brothers and a sister, named Antoine, Jean, Francois, Josse and Francoise.

  About 1598, Lord Jacques II of Bailleul, fs.. of Hector, took first refuge to France where King Henry IV, had revoked, in 1591, the sanguinary edicts of 1585 and 1588 and revived the ancient edicts of toleration. In 1598 he published the Edict of Nantes. The Lordship of Eecke, being at that time in Flanders, was thus subject to Philip II, King of Spain and suffered the Inquisition that started in 1566 and went on uninterruptedly till 1609. Lord Jacques II, together with Lord Antoine de Bailleul, will later leave France for England where they are known as the “Bayley”. Thus, the Bayley of England originated from Flanders and belongs to the Lineage of the Balliol of Flanders.
