Sarah was born on October 25th, 1857 in Marylebone, Middlesex and her christening took place on February 28th, 1858 in Saint John The Baptist, Shoreditch, Middlesex.1 2  Sarah's father was George William Rowlands and her mother was Elizabeth Emily Mills.  Her paternal grandparents were George Rowlands and Elizabeth Treby; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Mills and Hannah. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Robert, Elias and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the five children.
