William was born on June 22nd, 1848 in Stepney, Middlesex and his christening took place on August 27th, 1848 in Saint Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex.1 2  William's father was George Robert Bengough and his mother was Emma Sapsford.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Bengough and Lucy Hasey. He had four brothers and a sister, named George, Charles, Herbert, Horace and Emma.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
