Robert was born in 1827 in Ellerton, Yorkshire and his christening took place there on November 20th, 1827.1 2   Robert's father was Thomas Adamson and his mother was Ann Saunderson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Charlotte.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
