Bertha was born in 1902 in Wigston Magna, Leicester. Bertha's father was William Hurd GODDARD and her mother was Clara THOMPSON.  Her paternal grandparents were William Hurd GODDARD and Mary VEASEY. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Albert, Alfred, Joseph, Florence, Gertrude and Mabel.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
