James was born in 1849 in Chacombe, Northants.  James' father was Thomas CHINNER and his mother was Elizabeth WATTS. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Charles, Henry, Clement, Frances, Elizabeth, Hannah and Charlotte.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
