Joseph was born in 1852 in Atherstone, Warwickshire.  Joseph's father was Charles BRIERLEY and his mother was Jane <UNKNOWN>.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph BRIERLEY and Elizabeth <UNKNOWN>. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Jane.  He was the oldest of the three children.
