Emily E. Nearpass

  • I would learn a lot about Emily as she lived with William W. Avery and his family for some time while they operated the Winona Shirt Factory in Winona, Minnesota.  I have copies of several letters that Emily mailed home to her parents, A. Charles and Minnie in Seneca Falls.  I do not have any information why Emily lived with the William Avery family.  It might have been to help with their business, or just the fact  that they wish to have a 'daughter' in the family.  Actually,  the two  boys  Gilbert and Frank would refer to her as their 'sister'.  I recall Carolyn Hill saying that Emily was a very special person and someone that I would enjoy knowing.  Her husband, Paul Nearpass was originally married to Emily's sister, Susan Alice.   Following the sister death, Paul and Emily married.  Carolyn also mentions reading Emily's diary for the year 1903.  On July 29th of that year, Emily writes in her dirary that  '.....it was 4 years ago today that I came home from Minnesota'.
