Thomas was born in 1885 in Horsforth Yorkshire.1   Thomas' father is Smith Whitham and his mother is Hephzibah Kempson.  His paternal grandparents are Thomas Whitam and Mary (Whitam). He has two brothers named James Thomas and Herbert.  He is the second oldest of the three children.
