Emily Ann was born in 1875 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. Emily Ann's father was Alfred Woodland and her mother was Lydia Evans.  Her paternal grandmother was Ann. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Frederick William, Alfred Edgar, John Ivor, Harry, Lydia Jane, Louisa Isabel and Fanny Ada.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
