Elizabeth was born in 1874 in Bethnal Green.  Elizabeth's father was William Sleath and her mother was Susannah Woodland.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Woodland and Elizabeth Bailey. She had four brothers and a sister, named William Thomas, John Michael, James, Michael John and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
