Arthur Edward Mildren

Arthur was born about 1882 at 6 Petticoat Land East Ham.¹ Arthur's father was Alfred William Mildren (GasWorker) and his mother was Ellen Mary Tull. His paternal grandparents were Alfred Mildren (StokerGasWorks bur D 1598 Rip) and Ann Smart (bur D 1598 Rippleside); his maternal grandfather was James Tull and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Frank, Alfred, Eliza and Grace. He was the third oldest of the five children.

General Notes
- Arthur Mildren arriving in NY on 13/7/1917 aboard the cargo ship 'Hypatia' from which he deserted. That vessel plied its trade from Liverpool to Buenos Aires to Barbados to New York. I think we can now take my theory that 'he ran away to sea' to be based on fact, albeit slim.
  We know that Arthur Mildren abandoned his family (Daisy and the 2 sons Leslie & Alfred), when is not known. Some time later, Daisy took the boys to her mother-in-law's house and asked if she could leave the boys there while she went shopping. She never returned from that shopping trip! We understand that the grandparents found it a struggle and the boys were sent to Barnardo's @ Barkingside. The grandparents then fostered the boys from Barnardo's and this process then came with an allowance towards the boys upkeep.
  
  Interestingly, I am convinced that Arthur Mildren ended up in the States - I have found an Arthur Edward Mildren on records in Queens, NYC in 1942 with the same date of birth, born London, England and I am certain that this is the same man!
