Mary was born about December 1743 in Barking Essex and her christening took place on December 27th, 1743 at St Margaret's  Church Barking.1   Mary's father was John Hambleton (Pipemaker Will 11/989 d Barking) and her mother was Ann Plaile (of Dagenham).  Her paternal grandparents were John Hambleton (d Barking) and ?. She had six brothers and four sisters, named John, Eleazer, Thomas, Thomas, Eleazer, George, Sarah, Mary, Mary and Mary.
