Thomas was born in September 1833 in Barking Essex and his christening took place on September 22nd, 1833 at St Margaret's Barking.1   Thomas' father was William Godfrey (B Barking Fisherman) and his mother was Ann Marie Darnell (b Poplar).  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Godfrey and Sarah Blackwell. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William, Henry, John, James, Thomas, Emma, Ann, Eliza, Ann and Emma.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
