Eliza was born in 1843 in Barking Essex. Eliza's father was William Henry Best (a Baker) and her mother was Eliza Laby. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Best (fisherman) and Ann Hall; her maternal grandparents are James Laby (Coal Merchant) and <Unknown>. She had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Mary and Julia. She was the second youngest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Mary .
