Johann was born in 1699 in Stienwenden, Pfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.  Johann's father was Johann Simon Friess and his mother was Maria Elisabeth Goedel.  His paternal grandparents were Michael Friess and Anna Margaretha Eckers; his maternal grandparents were Johannes Goedel and Anna Elisabetha Rinden.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 63 in 1762 in Albany, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
