    Mary Ann Wade:  "The name Wade is equivalent to the name "Ford" from the old English "Wade", a river crossing, a place where the river could be waded.  The name is also occasionally Anglicized from the Dutch name "Weide".   The WADE name is frequently spelled WAID in old records.
         George Wade was the ancestor of a large family of Wades that went out from Monongalia County, Virginia to people the great West.  Some of the descendants, few in number, when compared with the host found elsewhere, have remained in this county.  George Wade was probably born between 1720  - 1725.  According to a tradition found in nearly every branch of his family, he came from Wales.  But an extended search has failed to establish his connection with any of the families of Wales. It is a fact that there are numerous Wades in Wales today who claim they are of Scandinavian origin.  Many of these people live near Fish guard and Roch Castle in the western part of Wales.
    
    "Evan Wade was in the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans. (Evan Waid, rank--private, enlisted November 10, 1814 for 6 months in Captain Wm. Philips' Company, Kentucky detached militia commanded by Lt. Col. Gabriel Slaughter).
    
    Evan and wife lived in Marion County, Kentucky for some time after their marriage.  Their son Ben was born there.  In 1820, they left Kentucky and moved to Lawrence County, Indiana.  In 1837 according to biographical record, they moved on to Daviess County, Indiana.  Land Office records show that Evan Wade "took up" W NE, E NW, E SW, W SE of Section 13 in Daviess County, Indiana on July 18, 1836.  [Note:  twp?]
    
    "In reviewing early Catholic records of Kentucky, I found that the only Catholic priest in that area was named Bennedict.  No doubt Evan and Eleanor named their son Ben after the priest who probably married them counseled and confessed them.
    
    "A great-grandson of Evan and Eleanor said, "Although Evan and Eleanora were Catholic, there was no church near in Daviess County.  The roads were few and no way of going only by horseback or road wagon, so they just had their children baptized, and what little they got else they got it themselves.  Part of them went one way, part some other way."
    
    "A family not of known source says that Evan Wade and wife are buried at "Kilgore, where Mary Cook Wade is buried in Van Buren township, Daviess County, Indiana.  A descendant of James Wade states positively  that Evan and Eleanor are buried in the old cemetery of St. Peters at Montgomery, Indiana.
    
    "This is the writing of my Uncle, age 79.  He and mother are only survivors of James Wade's son, William.  (Given to me by John A. Fields, 6009 South Turkey Creek Road, Morrison, CO 80465-9502)
    
    "Here is some information about the Wade Brothers.  Do hope that will be the information you are wanting.  do not know nothing of Aunt Bett and John. 
    
    "Evan Wade and Ellen Brewer had homesteaded some land.  they were Catholic, but due to poor conditions as far as the roads and  no other means to go to church, the closest church was St Peters's at Montgomery.  They had all the children baptized and part of them remained in the faith.  They were Uncle Ben, Uncle David, and my Grandfather James, Uncle John.  the two sisters married out of the church and raised their family.  Some were this and and some were that.  After Aunt Margaret passed away, Uncle John did go to church.  But some never did go back into the church.
    
    "James my grandfather and your great grandfather passed away in the year of 1891, the month of February.  Bess Wade Cox is 40.  She was just about a month old.  Uncle Ben passed on in the spring of 1909.  Uncle John in 1910, Uncle David was not far behind them.  Do not remember just what year.  James, Ben, David were all three laid to rest at St Michael's.  Uncle John at Raglesville Cemetery in Van Buren Township.
    
    "Another tidbit about John Evan and Eleanor Wade . . . they gave land to the Common School Fund in Daviess County in 1848 . . . Deed Book G, page 489.  The school was know as the Wade Schoolhouse."  (CMB note:  Original document, dated 26 Oct 1848, describes parcel as follows:  for "inhabitants of such fifth district...so much of section Thirteen as lies, commencing at the North west corner of the east half of North west quarter of said section thirteen, in Township four North of Range six west, then running South ten rods, then East ten rods, then North North [sic] ten rods, then West to the beginning," (signed) Evan Wade (his mark), Ellen Wade (her mark).  Source:  photocopy of original document, obtained 7/06 from Daviess County Courthouse, Washington, IN.)
    
    from bio of son Benedict J.:  bio:  BENEDICT J. WADE is a descendant of one of four brothers who came from Virginia to Kentucky at an early period where they became extensive slave-holders and acquired considerable wealth.  Two of the brothers went to Ohio where they freed their slaves, as did the two who remained in Kentucky.  On emancipating their slaves, each of the brothers gave his negroes forty acres of land.  The Wades continued to amass wealth and were in all probability the ancestors of all the Wades in this section of the country.  Benedict J. Wade is a descendant of one of the brothers who remained in Kentucky.  He was the fourth of a family of ten children born to Evan and Ellen (Brewer) Wade.  Evan was the grandson of one of the four brothers.  He was born in Kentucky in 1793, and in 1820 came to Lawrence County, Ind., where he resided until 1837, when he moved to Daviess County, where he spent the remainder of his days.  He was in the war of 1812 and in the battle of New Orleans.  He was a farmer in good circumstances and at the time of his death was the owner of 320 acres of well-improved land.  He was a member of the Catholic Church and a Whig until 1852, when he became an uncompromising Democrat.  He was one of the early pioneers and died in 1865.  The mother was a native of Maryland and when twenty-two years old moved to Kentucky.  She was born in 1790 and died in 1864.  She had three brothers who came to Daviess County, Ind., and one yet lives in Barr Township.  The Brewer family came from Belgium to this country in the same vessel with Lord Baltimore.          9 October Term 1867 (for one half cash, balance in twelve months)
         James Wade, administrator of Evan Wade deceased.
        
         Comes now said administrator and on this month, it is ordered by the court that said administrator be allowed the sum of $60.00 for his services herein.  And now comes said administrator and renders a fair account charging himself with total amount of asset, the sum of $295.93 and claiming credit for disbursement the sum of $236.47 and pays into court for the $59.46 for the fare.   Named heirs to wit:  John Wade the sum of $29.73 and for Elizabeth Reynolds $29.73.  All which support is by the court approved and Michael Murphy clerk is by the court allowed 2 1/2 per cent for disbursing the same and is furthered ordered by the court that said administrator be discharged.

KY, residing with Eleanor 60 (est b yr 1790), female, white, b. MD, > 20 y.o. and unable to read/write, David 22 IN > 20 y.o. and unable to read/write, John 21 IN, > 20 y.o. and unable to read/write, and (grandson) Ziba 7 IN.  Immed nbrs are John/Margaret MEYERS dw/fam 725  and (son) Benedict/Marietta WADE 30/27 KY/KY (dwelling/family 727), plus James/Mary WADE 31/27 KY/NC dw/fam 728.  No other related WADE/WAIDs (soundex) in Daviess, IN.

    Mary Ann Wade:  "The letter below was written by Samuel Joseph Wade.
    'As you know Benedict Wade was married two times.  His first wife was a sister to my grandfather's first wife.  Their maiden name was Cook.  And this Ziba Wade was Uncle Benedict's son by his first wife. His mother passed away the night Ziba was born, and Uncle Ben's mother (Eleanor Brewer) took Ziba home and raised him.  St Michael's Church was not built till 1887.  Suppose all of grandfather Evan family was baptized at St. Peter's.  That was the closes place to go to church.'  (Notations:  St Peter's was the burial place of Ben, David, and James)
    
    "Benedict J. "Ben" Wade; born May 19, 1820 in Marion County, Kentucky, died April 10, 1909 in Daviess County, Indiana.  He was the fourth child of John Evan Wade and Eleanor Brewer.  A grandson of Ben states that the "J" was only an initial, but some descendants say that it stood for Joseph.  Ben was married in 1840 or 1842 to Malinda Cook, and they had a son named Zeba or Zibea, born 1843.  Malinda died when Zibea was born, and his grandmother Eleanor carried him home and raised him.  Evan Wade was made his guardian in September of 1848, pg. 115 of Daviess County , Indiana records.  He may have been the tenth child of Evan.  In 1844, Ben married his second wife Marietta Gibson and they had twelve children.  He lived all of his life in Bogard Twp., Daviess County, Indiana and is buried in a Catholic cemetery there.  St. Michaels is a few miles south of their homestead."

    However, John Evan s/o Greenberry should be about age 26 in 1820.  Note double dividing line btwn 2d-3d, 9th-10th, 11th-12th and 13th-14th columns -- different breakdown?  Next set of entries begins:  "Washington C[ount]y, Town of Lebanon."  Also two John WADEs in Washington, KY, one in Springfield, another in unspecified twp (10010010100 (binding) 1, about 20 zeros, then final column "3."     Note that James BREWER, the (father-in-law) of Greenberry's son John Evan, appears in 1800 Washington Cty tax list. 
    
    Mary Ann Wade:  Greenbury's sister (Sarah Wade Owens) signed the marriage bond for John Evan Wade.  Most researchers assumed she was the mother, but I thought she was too young.  Another fact is that John Evan did not live with the Owens family, and Sarah named her first son with James Owens, JOHN.  The Owens family did move to Indiana, and John Evan and his wife followed.
    
    There are no WADE/WAID heads of household in 1810 census for Nelson Cty, KY, where Bardstown is located today, four in 1820, two in 1830, and two WAIDE in 1840.

    Mary Ann Wade:
         Evan and Eleanor Wade are said to have had ten children.
    
    1.  James Wade: (never called Jim)   Born June 13, 1816 in Washinton County, Kentucky and died February 7, 1892 and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Bogard Twp., Daviess County, Indiana.  James married (1st) Mary Cook, whose family was from North Carolina.  She was Protestant as was James at this time, and their seven children remained Protestant.  In April of 1858, Mary Cook Wade died and in the same year James marries (2nd) Nancy Queen.  She was Catholic, born May 11, 1833 and died October 15, 1910.  They became parents of eight children.  More data on this family in my files.  His grand-daughter, Mrs. Julia Wade Proctor, daughter of William Wade was still living in Plainville, Indiana at age 84 in 1966.
    
    2.  William H. Wade, B. 1820 , Washington County, Kentucky, D. About 1842, Daviess County, Indiana.  William was called a "Lost Ark" by a grandson of James Wade.
    
    3.  S. C. Alban (Alvin) Wade, b. 1818
    
    4.  Benedict Joseph "Ben" Wade, b. May 19, 1820, Marion County, Kentucky, d. April 10, 1909, Daviess County, Indiana.  Ben was the fourth child.  A grandson of Ben states that the "J" was only an initial, but some descendants say that it stood for Joseph.  Ben was married (1st) in 1842 to Malinda Cook, and they had a son named Zeba or Zibea, b. 1843.  Malinda died when Zeba was born, and his grandmother Eleanor carried him home and raised him.  Evan Wade was made his guardian in September of 1848, page 115 of Daviess County, Indiana records.  In 1844, Ben married (2nd) Marietta Gibson and they had twelve children.  He lived all of his life in Bogard township, Daviess County, Indiana and is buried in a Catholic cemetery there (St Michaels) a few miles south of their homestead.
    
    5.  Thomas "Alvin" Wade, b. About 1821
    
    6.  Julia Ann Wade  Julia was born on September 29, 1824 in Lawrence County, Indiana and died on November 25, 1882; married George Hackler born May 25, 1824 in Lawrence County, Indiana.  They had only one child.  Julia is buried in Raglesville Cemetery.  Another note says that she is buried in Cincinnati, Indiana (Greene County).  Robert W. Riggins, 5020 Carvel, Indianapolis, Indiana 46205 is a descendant.
    
    7.  Marietta Wade, b. about 1825 
    
    8,  David W. "Dave" Wade, b. April 27, 1827, Lawrence County, Indiana, d. December 1, 1908, St Michaels, Indiana.  "W" is said to have stood for either Wesley or Winthrop.  David was a devout Catholic and is buried in the same cemetery (St Michaels) as his brothers, James and Ben.  He always had his home in Bogard Township, Daviess County, Indiana.  David was a farmer and always voted the Democratic ticket.  He left a widow and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Turk (Katie) and Mrs. Frank Brewer (Nellie).
    
    
    9.  John Wade, b. about 1829, Lawrence County, Indiana, d. May 19, 1911, Daviess County, Indiana.  John was buried in a Protestant cemetery at Raglesville, Indiana, which is a small town north of the homestead.  he was the only one of these four brothers who was not a Catholic.  John was Methodist.  He served during the Civil War and was with General Sherman in his march to the sea.  He married Margaret Chrichlow, and their children were John, David, and Emory.
    
    10.Winifred Elizabeth "Betty" Wade, b. May 27, 1831, Daviess County,Indiana, d. September 16, 1913, Putnam County, Missouri, buried in the Owersville, Missouri Cemetery.  She was always referred to as "Bett" by the Daviess County relatives.  She was a Methodist.  Bett married Samuel Patrick Reynolds.
