    Historical Note: He was the first of his immediate family to come to Utah, following those of the LDS faith. He arrived at the age of 20. At the time of Johnson's army coming to Utah he was a member of the local militia stationed in the mountains. He went to work at the call of Brigham Young to build a road up Red Butte canyon for wood and a red stone quarry for the temple. He then was asked to create a road for the granite quarry up Little Cottonwood Canyon. He became a good leader and supervisor over men working under him. He then took employment supervising over 100 men working to build the Western Pacific Railroad. He was in charge of blasting rock away for the roadbed and creating two tunnels. It was at this time that he suffered a blast injury ultimately leading to the loss of an an arm. Brigham Young placed him as the head quarryman for the Little Cottonwood granite quarry for the Salt Lake Temple for many years. He had over 200 men under his charge. For many years there was a plaque honoring him near the quarry site.
    With his earnings after arrival in Utah he contributed to the Perpetual Emigration Fund. This was used to bring his grandmother, her daughter, and his five siblings to Utah from England. After plural marriage and in Fountain Green he acted as a constable.

    regarding James' quarry work:
    In about a half an hour the quarry was reached, and there a superintendent, James C. Livingston with a force of men are busily engaged in quarrying rock for the Temple, and as the railroad has now reached that point the transportation of rock will henceforth be an easy matter and a very large amount of stone, we are told, will be speedily transported to the Temple Block in this city. Every stone is quarried the size required and then numbered, and it only needs dressing when it reaches its destination, before it is ready for its place in the structure for which it is intended. The first piece hauled from the quarry by rail was brought yesterday, on a flat in the train which President Young and party traveled. It was an arch stone 51/2 feet long, 3 feet wide and 2 feet thick, and weighed three and three-quarters tons.
    
    (...) Wasatch Resort. When the granite for building the temple was taken from a quarry in Litte Cottonwood Canyon, James C. Livingston was foreman of the project and he, with the workers, lived in small cabins built with wooden floors and wooden sides a few feet high, topped with tent roofs. These cabins were surrounded with flower gardens, lawns, and attractive walks, and each had its own small stream of clear cold canyon water with dipping facilities and a cooler. These cabins were on the south side of the Little Cottonwood stream; a bridge crossed to the north side where the larger cookhouse was located in which meals were prepared and served for all employees in the quarry. In reference to the beautiful appearance of the spot. Mrs. Donette S. Kesler says, "The whole place was a dream."

    (...) James C. Livingston, who came from Scotland to Utah in 1853 and was one of the bodyguard of President Young. He was a most capable manager of men and directed the labors of a large force in railroad building in Utah. He also had charge of the quarry in getting stone for the temple until it was completed in 1893.

    Her grandfather, James C. Livingston, came to Utah in 1853 and for years was one of the bodyguard of President Young through the period of unrest. This company crossed the Missouri River on 14 July 1853.  No other LIVINGSTON in company.
    
    autobiographical sketch for James C. LIVINGSTON 1833:  We went up the Mississippi River to Keokuk a few miles below Nauvoo, the outfitting place for the emigration across the plains. We stopped at this place several weeks, breaking cattle and organizing companies for the great journey to the rocky Mountains. At this place I was detailed to guard and herd cattle as they were brought from the outfitting trains. While herding stock nearly opposite Nauvoo on the Iowa side of the river in company with R.W. Attwood, I had the pleasure of visiting the Mansion House at Nauvoo and spent the night there with Emma Smith and her children by Major Biddaman the man to whom she was married after the death of the Prophet. Our stay there was made a very pleasant one through the kindness of Major Biddaman who took us in his carriage to view the home of Brigham Young, and several of the twelve apostles including the home of Joseph Smith. The Temple had been burned but part of the walls were standing, and we were much interested even in the ruins.  I arrived in Salt Lake City October 16, 1853 having been seven months on the journey in Captain Appilton [Appleton] Harmon’s Ox Team Company. I traveled from the Mississippi River and drove an ox team the entire distance walking and fording rivers and streams. The Lord blessed me by sea and by land for which I was very thankful especially for the good health I enjoyed.

    There is also a James LIVINGSTON b. est 1828 in the Richard Ballantyne Company (1855).  Most travelers were Perpetual Emigration Fund (PEF) passengers who, under Elder Richard Ballantyne, had traveled from Liverpool, England, to America aboard the ship Charles Buck. Ballantyne himself was a returning missionary (he had served in India). The ship sailed on January 17 and, after an eventful 56-day voyage, arrived at New Orleans March 14. The passengers next boarded the steamboat Michigan and traveled up the Mississippi to St. Louis, arriving there March 27. Ballantyne and about 250 of his party then continued up the Missouri to Atchison, Kansas Territory, on the riverboat Golden State, arriving April 5. (Some who joined Ballantyne's overland train crossed the Atlantic on the ship Helious to New Orleans. At least one traveler came on the Siddons, landing at Philadelphia, then traveling by rail to Atchison. Others came on the Chimborazo via Philidelphia.)
