    According to the Gibbens-Butcher Genealogy (1894), Katherine was of German descent but "doubtless by nativity a Marylander."  "Her father was of Teutonic descent and the mother of Anglo-Saxon blood" (p. 106).
    
    It later recounts that the HERBERT (and var. spellings) family was esp. numerous "near the Potomac, at Alexandria, and throughout Maryland" (p 106).  On the same page, it then says  Katherine was born "near Moorefield, on the South Branch of the Potomac, in the ancient county of Hardy, Virginia."
    
    "Catherine Herbah in height was about five feet, four inches, in weight 200 pounds, hair in youth black, eyes of blue, complexion fair.  She was, in her younger days, athletic and graceful, and ever light of movement.  Among pioneer neighbors she was considered the best dancer in the 'Bend.'  She was nimble with loom and spinning-wheel, and from flax and wool, raised and produced upon the plantation, she manufactured garments for the ordinary wear of the family and servants.  Many were the woolen socks and mittens, warm and enduring, she spun from the wool, and knit with her own hands, for children and grand-children; many the counterpanes, quilts and blankets, woven by her and stored in large piles, at the old homestead, in reserve for use or gifts to descendants at marriage."  (G-B p. 108; some great stories follow, as Katherine foils a panther and shoots a bear.
    
    The book underscores that Katherine was not yet fourteen when she married John Gibbens.  Their first child was born near Wheeling, Ohio Cty, and the others near Stillwell. 
    
    After her husband John died, the book continues:  "Left alone, in a sparsely settled country, with a helpless family and limited means, Catharine Gibbens struggled bravely with the vicissitudes of fortune, the perils and deprivations of the frontier, and endeavored to support her children and educate them, amid limited opportunities, to an honorable manhood and useful womanhood."
    
    "In the course of three years, in January 1809, after her husband's death, Katherine Gibbens wedded Anthony Buckner, of historic family, a widower much older than herself, and by whom were born eight children."
    
    According to a deed in Hardy Co., WV (11:201, 12 Sep 1829), Katherine
    and her brother were the only two surviving of the eight children of Philip
    HOROBAUGH, who had died by 1829. Their lawyer in the sale of the land they inherited from him was Jefferson GIBBENS.
