Winging over Germany in the most deadly raids in history is a young Berkeleyan, Douglas F. Archer, 22, word of whose promotion to flying officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force has just reached his parents. Captain and Mrs Douglas Archer, 1060 Cfog. mont Avenue. 'If I’m taken prisoner [...]' writes the son of a British officer in World War I and a well known Berkeley poetess. He leaves the sentence unfinished as he also pens: It’s lonely work being papa in a bomber. - Young Archer, whose present rank is a little higher than that of a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, couldn't drive to a recruiting office fast enough when word came of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Motoring to Palo Alto, he turned back to join the U.S. Army, won his sergeant's stripes and then decided he wanted to [...] He was transferred to the R.C.A.F. with his present mission the answer to his hope to maintain family tradition of fighting men. Flying Officer Archer’s uncle, Col. Flockhart Aitken, is attached to the British Intelligence Division. His father, who saw active service in the First World War, won a disability discharge after distinguished service in the British armed forces. A graduate of Berkeley High School, Flying Officer Archer attended Brown Military Academy for two years, winning honors as [...] cadet. Later he attended University of Southern California. His mother, writing under the name of Kate Rennie Archer, is well known in literary circles and is author of a new volume of verse, "Recurrent Vigil."
