History:
Peter Turner Bone, 1859-1945, (sometimes known as Peter Turner-Bone) was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, and studied civil engineering at the University of Glasgow. He moved to Ontario in 1882, and to Alberta the following year, where he was employed as an engineer by the Canadian Pacific Railway, 1883-1886. He did railway survey work in Maine, USA, 1887-1888; for the Regina and Long Lake Railway, Saskatchewan, 1889; and for the Calgary and Edmonton Railway, 1890-1891. In 1892 he married Elizabeth Allan, also from Scotland, and they had two sons, John, 1893-1915 and Allan, 1895-. From 1892 to 1903 he was in private practice in Calgary, mainly in irrigation work, and from 1903 to 1906 was assistant chief engineer for the CPR's irrigation projects. In 1906 he resumed his private practice as a consulting engineer. His book of reminiscences about railway work, When the Steel Went Through, was published in 1947.
Custodial History:
Much of this fonds (M-109) was found in the attic of the Bone house at 301-4 St. SW, Calgary shortly before it was torn down, in about 1962.
Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of drafts and photoproofs of When the Steel Went Through (1940s); cancelled cheques, receipts and tax notices (1884-1903); oil stock certificates (1914-1941); and photographs of the family, irrigation, railway surveys, and Bow River floods (1884-1915). Includes Allan's reminiscences of Calgary in the 1900s-1910s (1974).
