William's father was Samuel Wray and his mother was Sarah Davis. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Alexander Wray and Rebecca Steen; his maternal grandparents were John Davis and Rebecca Bouvard. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, John, Alexander, Rebecca, Fanny and Sarah. He was the third youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 99 in 1975 in Thorold.
