Herbert's father was James Whitby and his mother was Isabella Dunn Maitland. His maternal grandparents were Disney Leith Maitland and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Drummond. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Disney, Elizabeth and Margaret. He was the youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 92 in 2013 in Ayr.
