Mary was born in June 1767 in Kirkliston and her baptism took place there on June 26th, 1767.

Mary's father was James Walker and her mother was Janet Flint.  Her paternal grandparents were William Walker and Elizabeth Barron; her maternal grandparents were John Flint and Marian Murkel. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Elisabeth.  She was the oldest of the three children.
